At Unilang we believe that learning a language goes far beyond studying grammar and vocabulary: it means opening doors, discovering other cultures and creating new opportunities. This is how Carlos González, director of Unilang and vice president of the Spanish Federation of Language Teaching Centers, explained it in an interview on COPE Cantabria, where he analyzed the evolution of language learning and the new trends in the sector.

English continues to be the most in-demand language, but interest in Spanish, language immersion experiences and the incorporation of artificial intelligence are transforming the way languages are learned and taught.

English remains the main player

Learning English is today a fundamental tool for getting by in an increasingly connected world. Traveling, accessing better job opportunities, completing studies or communicating with people from other countries are some of the reasons why more and more people are choosing to improve their level.

According to data shared by Carlos González on COPE Cantabria, of the nearly two million students who attend private language schools in Spain, approximately 92% choose English.

In Cantabria, this demand is also reflected in a trend that is becoming increasingly evident: students are reaching higher proficiency levels at younger ages.

Official certifications are also becoming increasingly important in both academic and professional settings. The B2 level has become a common requirement in many educational and work contexts, while more and more young people are preparing to reach C1 and even higher levels.

At Unilang we support our students along that path, adapting learning to their needs and helping them develop the language skills necessary to move forward with confidence.

Cantabria also attracts students who want to learn Spanish

International mobility is opening up new opportunities for language teaching in our region.

Cantabria is beginning to arouse growing interest among foreign students who want to learn Spanish while getting to know our culture, our customs and our surroundings. Among them are young people from countries such as France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy.

These experiences are usually organized as one- or two-week stays that combine Spanish classes in the morning with cultural and leisure activities in the afternoon. Accommodation with host families also allows them to practice the language in real situations and discover everyday life in Spain first-hand.

This is a language immersion model that for years many Spanish students have taken advantage of to improve their English in destinations such as Ireland, the United Kingdom or Canada.

As Carlos González pointed out in the interview, Cantabria has not historically had as much tradition in hosting foreign students, but this demand is growing.

This evolution represents an opportunity to project our region internationally and bring students from other countries closer to the Spanish language and culture.

Artificial intelligence: an ally for learning languages

Artificial intelligence is also changing language teaching. Its possibilities are growing all the time, for both teachers and students.

In education, it can facilitate the preparation of materials, the correction of exercises and the resolution of doubts. For students, it offers new possibilities for practice and can help them reinforce certain content at their own pace.

However, technology should not be confused with learning itself.

As Carlos González warns, machine translators and artificial intelligence tools can make mistakes. If a person still does not have a sufficient language foundation, they may have difficulty identifying them and understanding why a translation is not appropriate.

That is why, in language teaching, it is important to use these tools judiciously and as a complement to the teacher's work.

Technology can help us learn, but real communication, constant practice and the guidance of a good teacher remain essential.

Learning languages is investing in the future

The language-teaching landscape is evolving. English remains in the spotlight, Spanish is gaining international appeal and technology is opening up new possibilities to improve learning.

In this context, having a good language education makes it possible to face academic, professional and personal challenges with greater confidence.

At Unilang Escuela de Idiomas we work so that our students not only learn a language, but are able to use it, communicate confidently and take advantage of the opportunities offered by an increasingly international world.

Because every language we learn brings us closer to new people, new experiences and new ways of understanding the world.
